Timber Preservatives

The durability of many timbers can be enhanced by preservative treatments. This involves the introduction of stable chemicals into the cellular structure of the timber which protect it from wood destroying organisms.

With current commercial treatment procedures, it is not possible to treat heartwood effectively becasue heartwood cells contain resins and other extractives which prevent the uptake of the preservative solution.

Therefore the natural durability (relates to the resistance of heartwood of the species to fungal and insect attack) of the timber must also be taken into consideration when specifying your timber product.
